What is malatang?
Malatang (麻辣烫) is a build-your-own soup bowl: a popular Chinese street food, originally from Sichuan. You pick raw ingredients from a fridge, they're weighed, and the kitchen cooks them for you in the soup base you choose. The name means "numbing, spicy, hot", but you don't have to go spicy.
How to order malatang at Pergh
- Pick. Grab a bowl and fill it from the fridge: 68 fresh ingredients, from sliced beef and scallop to enoki, tofu and noodles.
- Weigh & choose. Bring it to the counter. Everything is RM6.90 per 100g, one flat price. Then pick your soup base.
- Collect. We cook it fresh. Pick it up when your number is called.

Tips for your first bowl
- Start smaller than you think. Raw ingredients add up fast once they're cooked. You can always come back for more.
- Mix your textures: one protein, a couple of vegetables, a mushroom, something chewy and a noodle.
- Try our best sellers: sliced beef, scallop, enoki, Japanese tofu, cheese tofu and vermicelli.
- Not sure about spice? Signature Mala comes in three heat levels, so start at Level 1. Or try Tomato, our family-friendly favourite.
- Still hungry? Add a bowl of white rice for RM3 to finish the soup.
Is malatang halal?
Malatang isn't halal by default: it depends on the ingredients, the soup and the kitchen. Pergh Malatang is JAKIM halal-certified under MS 1500:2019 (Cert No. E49754, valid until 15 September 2028), making us Kuching's 1st halal-certified malatang.
